Planted Habits is a calm habit tracker where every habit grows its own plant, a missed day just waits, and there is no health bar to lose. Habitica is a role-playing game where checking off tasks earns gold, experience and gear, and a missed daily task can cost health, which suits people who love a game with stakes.

If your habits keep falling apart after one rough day, Planted Habits is built for you. Prices and app details here are as of October 2026.

Habitica or Planted Habits: which one will you still open after a hard week?

Think about the last habit you quit. Did you drift away because it got boring? Or did you hit a bad week, see a number drop to zero and think, “well, that’s ruined”?

If it was the second one, the way an app handles a missed day matters more than any feature list. So let’s follow one rough week through both apps and see what happens.

When life gets rough, a habit app should be easy to come back to.

What does a sick week look like in each app?

Picture Marlon. He keeps three habits: a morning walk, ten pages of a book, and a glass of water with every meal. On Tuesday he wakes up with a fever and is in bed until Friday.

In Planted Habits

Each of Marlon’s habits is a plant. He has been checking in, and the plants have grown. A plant gets new stages at 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 check-ins, and full bloom comes at 28.

On Tuesday he marks the day as a rest day. He can do that for today or for earlier days, from the calendar. Rest days never break a streak, so his streak numbers are still there on Saturday.

If he forgets and does nothing, here is exactly what happens. The plants keep every stage they have earned, because stages come from total check-ins, not days in a row. The streak number restarts, because those days were not marked as rest. We would rather tell you that plainly. The plants wait, and the garden is still there on Friday.

After a few quiet days, he gets one kind note to come back, not a guilt trip. One tap on a habit and the plant grows again.

In Habitica

Habitica has a step-off switch too. Its settings include a “Pause Damage” button, and its help text says it stops you losing health for missed dailies. Marlon can flip it before he is ill. If he forgets, its help text says missing dailies causes you to lose health.

So both apps have a way to take the pressure off. In Habitica, the game keeps score unless you tell it to stop. In Planted Habits, there is no health score to begin with, and the plant waits by default.

If you would like more on getting back after a gap, our guides on what to do after you break a streak and the never miss twice rule are a good next read.

What else do you get in Planted Habits?

Beyond how it handles a missed day, here are the things people tend to weigh.

  • A plant for every habit. Each one grows through 8 stages. At full bloom you pick a mystery seed to start again, and the finished plant moves into your album. There are more than 220 plants to grow.
  • Habits shaped to your week. Pick from 350+ ready-made habits in 20 categories, or write your own. Schedule them daily, on weekdays, on chosen days or as a weekly goal. Use a simple tick or a count, like eight glasses of water.
  • Reminders that are kind. Set a time per habit, with a 10 minute snooze. You also get an evening heads-up when a streak is at risk.
  • A home-screen widget on iPhone and Android.
  • Notes and past days. Add a short note to a check-in, and fill in a day you forgot to log.
  • Privacy. No ads and no account needed. Your habits, notes and photos stay on your phone, with a backup file or optional encrypted sync for a new phone.
  • A browser version with the same garden in a bigger layout.

Where is Habitica stronger?

Habitica is a real game, and it does things we do not. Made by HabitRPG, Inc., it gives you an avatar, collectable gear and pets, and lets you team up with friends in parties and share task lists in challenges. It also has a to-do list built in, so habits, dailies and one-off tasks live in one place. Our guide on habit tracker vs to-do list can help you sort out which you need. It is open source, and its App Store listing says it can be fully enjoyed for free.

Planted Habits has no avatar, no parties, no challenges and no to-do list. If you are motivated by points, loot and friends, Habitica is a very good fit.

Planted Habits and Habitica: your questions

Does Planted Habits punish me for missing a day?

No. Your plant keeps every stage it has earned and waits for you. If the day was not marked as a rest day, your streak number does restart, but marking rest days keeps it in one piece.

Does Habitica really take health away if I miss a day?

Yes. Habitica’s help text says missing dailies causes you to lose health points. There is a Pause Damage button in Settings that stops this, which is useful for illness or time away.

Is there a habit tracker like Habitica without the penalties?

Planted Habits has no health system, no avatar and no parties. It is a plant per habit with rest days, reminders and a widget.

Is Planted Habits free?

It is free to start, with Premium at $4.99 a month, $34.99 a year or $79.99 once, as of October 2026. Habitica says on its App Store listing that it can be fully enjoyed for free, with optional subscriptions and gem packs.

Do I lose my plant if I stop for a month?

No. The plant keeps the stage it has reached, because stages come from total check-ins. Your streak number would start again from zero.

Can I use Planted Habits on iPhone and Android?

Yes, and in a web browser too. Habitica is on iPhone and iPad, in a web browser at habitica.com, and on Google Play.
